SURF BREAKS AS A NATURAL MONUMENT

The 7 best surf spots in Cantabria, Spain: Liencres, El Brusco, La Vaca Gigante, La Fortaleza, Ribamontán Al Mar, San Vicente, Los Locos

A historical proposal

Surf & Nature Alliance is working to establish a new figure of Legal Protection for a wide area of the 7 most important wave breaks along a major section Cantabria (northern Spain) coastline. We are working to make these surfbreaks a Natural Monument.

The official approval of this wide Natural Area with legal and long-term protection of its surf breaks will be the first figure of this kind Europe, and will surely be an inspiring example to be followed by other communities and countries.

Current status of the project

Last update April 2018.

The proposal is currently being processed, and would favor the
patrimonialization and future integration in spatial management and long-term legal protection (EIA, OT, ENP, sectoral and cross-sectional plans) of the best surf breaks in Cantabria: San Vicente de la Barquera, Los Locos, Liencres, La Vaca Gigante, Ribamontán Al Mar, El Brusco and La Fortaleza.

Final approval

Final approval will be a pioneering milestone in assessing hydrodiversity and surfing as a unique and specific conservation interest in Spain and Europe. An inspiring example and a great achievement for the strategies of legal protection and sustainable management accomplished by the Surf & Nature Alliance. We will be soon very happy to announce the recognition of the 7 surfbreaks as a Natural Monument to our natural and cultural heritage.
