Nearly two years have passed since the Global Ocean Treaty was approved by the United Nations, a historic moment that marked a turning point in ocean protection.
Today, we’re thrilled to share that Spain has taken another long-awaited step to change the course of history. The Spanish government has announced the ratification of the Treaty, making it the first European Union country to formally present it to the United Nations for implementation.
What does this mean?
Spain’s ratification confirms its commitment to creating the first high-seas marine sanctuaries, and we hope this move will inspire other nations to follow suit.
For the Treaty to take effect, at least 60 countries must ratify it by incorporating it into their national legislation. So far, 16 countries have ratified it globally, but 44 more need to do so before the UN Ocean Conference in Nice, France, this June. Only then can the Treaty become enforceable, paving the way for the creation of high seas sanctuaries to protect marine life.
Why is this urgent?
Our oceans are on the brink of collapse. Industrial fishing, plastic pollution, and the looming threat of deep-sea mining are accelerating this crisis, especially in areas that desperately need protection. Without the Global Ocean Treaty, these critical habitats remain vulnerable.
